 America’s largest manufacturer of backyard wood structures expands in Monroe. Backyard Products adds 60,000 SF and several new jobs.

MONROE October 22, 2020
One of Monroe County’s premier companies, Backyard Products announced today that it is adding 60,000 SF to its existing 200,000 SF facility. This $4MM+ expansion project will provide the company additional space along with the modernization of the production facilities. 
The Monroe County Business Development Corporation BDC) is supporting the company with both potential PA198 application and developing talent requirement strategies. “We supported Backyard in 2006 when they moved to Monroe. We are certainly happy to support them with their expansion in our community.,” stated Tim Lake President of the Monroe County BDC.
With the accelerated growth of the company, the new expansion was paramount. “It’s an exciting
time for us. The new expansion and interior upgrades speak to the hard work and dedication of
all our Monroe employees,” said Dan Dalach, Backyard’s Executive Vice President of Human
Resources. “We’re excited at the prospect of creating 15-20 new jobs and very appreciative
of the continued support from the Monroe community and assistance from the Monroe County
Business Development Corporation”. Thomas van der Meulen, Backyard’s CEO added “we are
proud of our company’s Michigan presence and origins starting back in the 70’s. Since then, we
have expanded in many other backyard related categories and we see tremendous growth
opportunities both organically and through continued acquisitions”.
Construction is scheduled to begin late October with estimated completion by April 2021.
Further building upgrades, interior renovations and new manufacturing equipment will also be
added in 2021.
 Backyard Products has been a leading designer, manufacturer and installer of backyard wood
structures for over 45 years – selling sheds, play sets and outdoor living structures through direct
channels and major retailers. Key brands include: Heartland Sheds, Gorilla Playsets, Handy
Home Products, Swing-N-Slide and Studio Shed.
Currently, Backyard has over 500 employees between its corporate headquarters in Ann Arbor,
MI and 4 divisional headquarters in Monroe, MI, Atlanta, GA, Boulder, CO and Dallas, TX, plus
33 branch offices that provide installation services of their wood products across the country.
