Baker College Girls STEM Camp at the Clinton Township campus was a flying success for girls ages 12-14 from the Warren and Mount Clemens areas, Tuesday, Aug. 8.

The campers were immersed in building small drones, driving robots and learning about cybersecurity, cyber defense and other STEM-related careers.

“This enthusiastic and inquisitive group of girls learned about technologies used in some of our nation’s most technical and sophisticated organizations,” said Patricia A. Kaufman, Ed.D., Baker College of Clinton Township president. “Each time we introduce a young girl to the possibilities available in STEM careers, we open the door for her to become something she might never have previously imagined.”

Baker College Girls STEM Camp is one of many efforts across the state that Baker College campuses have undertaken to interest more females early on in pursuing careers in STEM-related fields.

“Women are greatly underrepresented in such fields, and employers want and need a workforce that is diverse and includes females,” said Richard Bush, Ph.D., dean of the College of Information Technology for Baker College. “These are rewarding careers with excellent pay.”

STEM-related occupations are projected to grow among the fastest of all occupations through 2022, reaching employment of more than 9 million. That’s an increase of 1 million jobs over 2012 STEM-related employment.
