Wayne State University has announced that Avalon International Breads will operate a retail location in the new home of the Mike Ilitch School of Business. The café is set to open before fall classes begin at the end of August.

The popular Detroit-based bakery will occupy approximately 700 square feet on the first floor of the building at the southwest corner of Woodward and Temple in the District Detroit. The café will include a “grab-and-go” retail space and small seating area with entry off of Woodward Ave. and easy access to Little Caesars Arena to the south.

“We will offer breakfast fare, sandwiches, salads, soups, a nice selection of bakery items, coffee, and other hot and cold beverages,” said Avalon co-founder and CEO Jackie Victor.

Exact hours are yet to be determined, but Victor intends to open early enough to serve faculty and staff arriving in the morning and stay open late enough to serve students attending evening MBA classes. The location will be accessible from the street as well as from inside the building.

“We intend to be full service to the Ilitch School community, our neighbors and the general public,” Victor said.

Founded in 1997 in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, Avalon International Breads will now boast six locations across Metro Detroit. Their products, made with 100% organic flour, are also sold at more than 40 restaurants and markets across Southeast Michigan.

Wayne State’s Associate Director of Real Estate Nicole Jackson expects Avalon to be a great addition to the new Mike Ilitch School of Business facility.

“Not only do they offer healthy, high-quality food, but they are a locally based business that is committed to giving back to our community here in Detroit,” Jackson said.

The location will not accept Warrior Dollars, but students and employees will be able to pay with their OneCard. A specific opening date will be announced this summer. Fall 2018 classes begin on Wednesday, August 29.
