Assistant Volunteer Coordinator (Seasonal Program Specialist)

Job Description

Provides on-site volunteer management and hospitality at special events, adaptive programs, stewardship workdays and any other event utilizing volunteers throughout the year.  Informs and educates the public about Oakland County Parks and Recreation facilities and programs at wellness fairs, info booths, job fairs and other outreach opportunities throughout the year.  Maintains relationships with internal and external individuals and groups to support accomplishment of Organization Development goals.  May utilize Countywide and/or department specific software to assist with scheduling volunteers and producing department reports at the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator.  This part time position requires weekend and evening work scheduled two weeks in advance, approximately 20 hours per week, depending on event schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

When completing the application if applicable, provide full detail in the employment history section noting the skills, experience and hours worked per week pertaining to the minimum qualifications. 

At the time of application, applicants must:

1.  Be at least 16 years old and a high school graduate; OR have completed the State requirements for a G.E.D. certificate; OR be an emancipated minor; OR have passed their 18th birthday; 

NOTE: When assigned to Golf Course Grill rooms, must have passed their 18th birthday, per the State of Michigan, due to the sale of alcoholic beverages.
2.a.  Have at least six (6) months of full-time work experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity preferably in a park, recreation and/or program setting; OR 

b.  Have at least six (6) months paid or voluntary experience in Leadership for organizations such as civic, philanthropic, school clubs, and/or sports teams.
3.  Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license. Out of country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date.   

4.  Pass the employment physical established for this classification.

Special Requirements

1.  Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license. 

2.  If assigned to a youth recreational program, prior to employment, candidates will be required to provide Parks & Recreation with documentation from the Michigan Department of Human Services (previously called Family Independence Agency) that they have not been named in a central registry case as the perpetrator of child abuse or child neglect.  In addition, applicants being considered for hire will be asked to sign a form authorizing Parks & Recreation to request and receive a criminal history check in accordance with the privacy act of 1974. 

Applicants for positions at Parks & Recreation will not be considered if they have been convicted of either of the following:
(a)        Child Abuse or Neglect.
(b)        A felony involving harm or threatened harm to an individual within the 10 years immediately preceding the date of hire.
