Job Description

Under general supervision, installs, maintains and repairs drainage and irrigation systems including automatic and manual clocks, valves, and sprinkler heads. Ensures that the proper amounts of water necessary for the upkeep of various trees, lawns, shrubbery and foliage on County grounds are met. Sets sprinkler system controllers. Blows down each sprinkler system in the fall. Coordinates, inspects and assists outside contractors in the design and installation of irrigation systems. Works on blueprints, sprinklers and controllers in the workshop. Determines the skills required and estimates employee hours, materials, tools and equipment necessary to accomplish the work. Is expected to recognize occupational hazards associated with the job, and to exercise appropriate safety measures. Is responsible for recognizing and evaluating difficult and/or complex problems that arise during the course of a project and for taking appropriate remedial actions. Is expected to attend educational seminars and continuing education unit re-certification when requested. When not engaged in activities related to the specialty area, employees in this class perform lower level groundskeeper duties.

Minimum Qualifications

At the time of application, applicants must:

1.  Be a high school graduate; OR have completed the State requirements for a General Educational Development certificate; AND          

2.  Have three (3) years of full-time grounds keeping experience involving turf care, grounds keeping, greenhouse production, plumbing, soil science, electronic controls, hydraulic engineering, etc. 

3.  Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.  Out of Country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date. 

4.  Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification. 

5.  Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

Special Requirements

  Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeurs license.
