At its annual House of Delegates Meeting, the American Society of Safety Professionals(ASSP) presented Richard Olawoyin with the 2019 Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award for Professional Development – Technical Publication, Editor and Author.

The honor recognizes society members whose services and activities within the last 12 months have made a positive impact on the organization and led to measurable, significant and recognizable accomplishments. Recipients are nominated by board members of the ASSP.

An associate professor of industrial and systems engineering at Oakland, Olawoyin, has served more than two years as the lead editor of the ASSP publication, Safety Leadership & Professional Development. The book project involved 43 contributing authors and 55 technical peer-reviewers from around the world.

In 2014, Olawoyin was nominated by the ASSP to serve as a program evaluator for the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, a non-governmental organization that accredits post-secondary education programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

He was later appointed by the Area Delegation as ABET commissioner, and was also elected to serve as the assistant administrator of the ASSP Environmental Practice Specialty (EPS) from 2018-2020. He will serve as the EPS administrator until 2022.

Olawoyin is a professional member of the organization’s Greater Detroit Chapter, a member of its Blacks in Safety Excellence Common Interest Group and a member of its Academics, Engineering and Environmental practice specialties.

For more than 100 years, the ASSP has supported occupational safety and health professionals in their efforts to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. The organization provides education, advocacy, standards development and a professional community to its members in order to advance their careers and the occupational safety and health profession as a whole.
