The Macomb-OU Incubator (Mac-OU Inc) was recently awarded $7,000 in Business Accelerator Funds (BAF) to provide accelerator services to client company Alerje.

Alerje has designed a unique epinephrine auto-injector (EAI) which fits into a smartphone case and will communicate with a mobile app via Bluetooth technology. During an anaphylactic medical emergency, the mobile app will send alerts, including location details, to 911 dispatchers and a user’s designated “Care-Circle.” In addition, users will be sent push notifications whenever the medication is approaching its expiration date.

As many as 15 million Americans suffer from food allergies. Two-thirds of these patients reportedly don't carry their life-saving EAI medical devices due to the size currently available on the market. It is imperative for those suffering from food allergies to always carry their EAI and call 911 immediately after administering the medication.

The Alerje product will improve adherence due to convenient placement into a smartphone case, a first for the market. The supporting mobile application and program interface will aid in improving the overall quality of life of those that suffer from food allergies. In addition, the price point will be at approximately one-third of the cost of current market offerings.

This BAF award will allow for Alerje to continue to develop this food-allergy platform.

"Our company is looking forward to continuing in partnering with Michigan-based firms in the co-development of our platform. The assistance that we've received from the Mac-OU Inc team is invaluable as this is our first BAF award," said Javier Evelyn, Alerje Founder and CEO.

BAF awards are an initiative of the State of Michigan’s 21st Century Jobs Fund Program and are distributed by the Michigan Small Business Development Center (MI-SBDC) through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Michigan’s network of business accelerators. As the State’s leading BAF award winner, having garnered nearly $700,000 in BAF funds to assist its client companies in the last five years, Mac-OU Inc is successfully delivering specialized business acceleration services to companies commercializing advanced technology.
